Washington, D.C. – Pro-Choice Caucus Vice Chair Congresswoman Norma J. Torres (CA-35) issued the following statement on the one-year anniversary of the Supreme Court’s ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, which overturned Roe v. Wade and reversed nearly half a century of legal precedent:

“As a mother and grandmother, and on behalf of the 36 million women already suffering the consequences of the disastrous Dobbs decision, I am outraged. A year ago, the Supreme Court decided women are second-class citizens who do not have the right to make decisions about their own bodies. By eliminating women’s right to self-determination, this conservative-majority Court betrayed the ideals of our nation,” said Congresswoman Torres. “I refuse to let today’s young girls grow up with fewer rights than I did, and I will not allow our country to backslide to the days of back-alley abortions. A woman’s decisions about her body are hers and hers alone.”

“Now, extremist Republicans are hijacking what is supposed to be a routine government funding process to push through their extreme, anti-women, anti-reproductive freedom agenda. As a member of the Appropriations Committee, which oversees all federal funding, I’ll continue to speak out against these political stunts because I trust women – not DC Republicans – to make decisions about their own bodies and futures,” added Congresswoman Torres. “As Vice Chair of the Pro-Choice Caucus, I will not relent in the fight to protect access to reproductive health care and pass the Women’s Health Protection Act to finally enshrine the right to abortion into law.”
